Player Talent Scout: Angel Gomes

Posted on 08th November 2020

In December 2017, aged 16 years and 263 days, Angel Gomes made his debut at Old Trafford, becoming the youngest player to appear for the Manchester United first team since the legendary Duncan Edwards.

Gomes was seen as the most exciting academy prospect United had produced in years, but his career stalled with only sporadic substitute appearances over the next few seasons.

This lack of opportunity prompted Gomes to reject a new contract and make a move to Lille this summer, who immediately loaned him out to Boavista.

He has started this season in incredible form, with three assists on his debut against Nacional, his first senior goal against Moreirense and then on Monday night he was magnificent as Boavista handed Lisbon giants Benfica their heaviest domestic defeat in 5 years, producing a man of the match display including a goal and an assist.

Gomes is an attacking midfielder with flawless technique, a burst of pace and composure in front of goal. He should benefit this season from being the main man at Boavista, and if he continues his current form a return to Lille next summer should see him continue his development at a club known for giving youth a chance.

Gomes will be hoping to prove United wrong in not giving him more first team chances and the early signs are that United may rue not giving the England Under 20 international more opportunities.
