Soccer Manager believes that most of the answers to your questions are covered within our Help.

In your situation, I think if you upgrade to Gold, the feature that will benefit you the most will be "Holiday Mode". Holiday Mode will allow you to do the following when enabled:

* When in Holiday Mode you will not lose any of your clubs due to not logging on for the SM default 14 days or Custom Game Worlds minimum 7 days (if option set in Advanced Rules);
* You can still log in as normal when Holiday Mode is enabled;
* The Assistant Manager will manage your starting XI on your behalf swapping injured, suspended or NMF players out of your starting line-up.

So if you are busy with family duties, you won't lose your clubs.
