Player Talent Scout: Fábio Silva

Posted on 08th April 2020

Fábio Daniel Soares Silva is a 17 year-old striker who has been breaking records for FC Porto this season. Fábio Silva came through the Porto youth academy, but transferred to rivals Benfica in 2015, before returning to Porto in 2017.

His goalscoring form for the Porto under-19 team convinced manager Sérgio Conceição to integrate him into the Porto first team squad this season, and the young centre forward has already broken a number of club records.

He became the youngest league player in the club’s history when he made his debut against Gil Vicente in August 2019, and he has since become the club’s youngest ever player in European Competitions, the club’s youngest ever starter in any competition, the club’s youngest ever goalscorer, and the club’s youngest ever league goalscorer.

Fábio Silva is from a footballing family, his older brother Jorge Silva plays for Lazio, and their father, also called Jorge is a former Portuguese international who was part of the Boavista side who won the Portuguese title in 2000-01, the last club outside of the big three to win the league.

Although his brother is a defender and his father was a defensive midfielder, Fábio is a natural goalscorer who is able to play as a target man or an off the shoulder striker, demonstrating his strength and pace. He is a modern centre forward who like to press the opposition centre backs, and loves to shoot on sight.

Fábio Silva will continue to develop at Porto, and he may follow in the footsteps of so many young Portuguese prospects and make the move to one of Europe’s big leagues in the future.
