Work In Progress: Promotion Play Offs

May 8th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

Like with ‘Stadium Building’ another feature which has been requested time and time again is ‘Play Offs‘. Some of you will be pleased to know that ‘Promotion Play Offs’ is currently under development, and should be within the game in a matter of days.

I will not go into to much detail about what it will involve as all of this information can be found within the link in the first paragraph. However, the format will be the same as stated in my last post regarding this feature:

“The semi-finals would be a one off match, with 6th playing 3rd and 5th playing 4th, and the home team being the higher placed team. The Final would be played at a neutral stadium and again would be a one off match, with the winner securing promotion to the next tier of the league pyramid.

For normal setups the semi-finals would be on Thursday (the day after the season ends on the Wednesday), with the final contested on Friday, and in custom setups the semi-finals would be on Friday (the day after the season ends on the Thursday), with the final contested on Saturday.”

Obviously with having three possible matches in the same number of days there would be an issue of fitness, and naturally we would address this issue and put something in place to help players recover slighly quicker.

Also I know that people will be asking on this article or via SM Support how they will get introduced, and also in which setups so I will answer that question now so I do not create any extra work for myself! Promotion Play Offs will be introduced in every standard and Gold setup run by SM, and Custom setup owners will have an option within their advanced rules of whether they want to include them or not. Also this new feature will only become available once an existing season comes to an end, and it will be included in any new setups.

This is a great idea. I don’t like the part about the amount of games in that time, although if you guys are sorting the fitness levels out, then I suppose I can’t grumble. Playoffs are a must though!

The only way to make this work is to make fitness go back to nearly perfect before each playoff game. I wouldn’t want my starting 11 to be decimated just for winning a playoff game and then show up even at 90% for a game that determines the worth of my entire season.

    Scenario:

My team - sitting in 3rd and one point behind team in second and 4 points ahead of 4th place with one game left to play.

Result - My team and team in second place both win last game of the season. 4th team loses. Season ends with my team 7 pts. ahead of the likely 4 seed and one point shy of 2nd and guaranteed promotion.

Problem: I had to use my best 11 to try to get into second place. Now I’m left with a fatigued side for a playoff game in a scenario where my team is clearly better (7 points better) than the 4th place side.

How fair is it that a team at any position had to make a push to either automatically gain promotion or make playoffs to be forced into a situation where their best 11 is fatigued from the push and the other team, regardless of standings had the luxury to rest players? What happens if a team gets a player injury in the semis and the manager for some reason can’t log on before the next game time and is forced to play with an NMF player on the field?

Players Conditions are not affected during Play Offs

But isn’t that what football is about? Here’s another scenario:

Hull City miss out on promotion on the last day of the season because Stoke draw with Leicester. Hull then go on to be beaten by Watford in the playoffs, even though they only just scraped into the playoffs after a draw against Blackpool on the last day.

It’s the way football goes sometimes. It’s part of the entertainment.
