Squad: SM Squad Sizes
March 27th, 2007 by SM Dev (ste)
Squad sizes are getting out of a hand. Some clubs have over 100 players in their squad, which is just hogging players, and plunging clubs into debt. People complain about wages , but what club in real life could survive with over a 100 players on their books?
I have just looked at a club with has 56 players in their first team, 56 in in their youth, and 4 out on loan, a total of 116 players!!!
No club in real life would have a squad size larger than 50 at most.
We will be introducing a cap of 50 players in the first team squad, and also a cap of 50 players in the youth squad, a maximum of 100. This number will then be reviewed (and likely decreased) in the near future.
This will not mean people will lose any players but they will not be able to sign any new players until their squads have been reduced.

I think this is a good idea as it’s hard for other players who are looking to buy players find it hard when you have to scan 60 players to find a decent one.

This is a terrible idea. Read this for more: http://www.soccermanager.co.uk/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=89659
Large squads harm nobody.

Think this is a very bad idea, can’t see any justification for a limit on squad sizes. If it is a site speed issue, surely this would have been noticed before?

Agreed 100% with the two above - a cap is not needed.

I think a cap is long overdue. Why should teams tie up players they never use and then get their team into debt. I think any club that gets more than 10 million in debt should go into administration - meaning that SMFA can accept bids for any of their players until they have a positive balance.

No! a cap is essential to a realistic game. Anybody who disagrees obviously has a megasquad and is hogging all current good players and probably all the future ones. Bring in a cap and give them a time limit to sell players to bring their squads down to size.

i recon the cap should be decreased to 40 even 30 a team, it is rediculous having any more than that, otherwise one team in eachleague will have unlimited amounts of good players and the game willbecome pointless and un realistic

Caps dont exist in real life, so would not be realistic. Also it is a wrong assumption to think that large squads = debt. For many smaller clubs in the absence of stadium upgrades to reward success etc, having a big talented squad is the only way to make money. It is first come first serve, and hogging does not exist, there is always the next big thing out there and NO manager has a monopoly on current or future talent in this game. Those that complain about large squads, are, IMO, normally just envious.

Squad size cap is a matter which is long overdue in SM. Where in the world can we find a club with more than 50 first squad players? My opinion is that the max squad size should be 35.

I think 120 players is still way too many for any squad I would suggest 50 players would be more realistic or limits on numbers of 1st team players to say 30 + 30 youth team ?

40 is MAX…And i think SMFA should not limit the loan of player..

Hie. Why we should have a limit in ours youth squad? All the squads have more than 100 young players in differents categories. Think in a team in 4 division..how can a team think in win something in the game? The manager have to buy youngers players to the future. If he thinks in buy a star over 93 he will not be able to buy any other player. But if he can buy with these money 20 younger players and hope that some of them one day be 90’s then he can hope to win something. And he will make these over and over again until he have a good youth team. A squad size cap will make that the clubs in inferiors categories will be without managers for a long time. I have some teams with lot of money in WC Setups and i have make huge offers for a lot of 90’s players. I haven’t buy almoust anyone, One of the good things (there are a lot…ehehe) in the game is buy players but if no one sells players in some setups we have to try to make the setup have some fun. Isn’t fare for some managers that have buy in the last years only youngers players now to choose some and release the others or sell them for less money. One ideia is put one limit for year of players that can team could buy. For example: A team only can buy for season 10 to 15 players. The managers that have a lot of players in there teams buy more than 40 players to season, but with these limit and the fact that some players will leave the team because not all the youngers players will be really good the number of players will be less that are now.

This is a bad thing. I agree having big squads is a bit silly when half of your players dont get a game i should know as i have a 52man squad with my roma but thats nothink comperd to other people squads of 100 plus but i say good to them they are active and getting the players they think could be super stars, finnaly i dont thing there should be a cap but they should also get rid of the youth team and do an Ateam and a Bteam and gold members have an Cteam. so squads are better lay out and then you should have the choice to put each team into the cup i.e The Bteam cup, so more players are getting to play.

Have to agree with the consensus here. A cap isn’t needed as it can be managed using inflationary wage rises.
Increase salaries by at least 15% each season above rating change levels. Clubs will soon be forced to reduce squads or they won’t have the money to buy new players. This seems much fairer than a blanket ban.
Also, what happens if you have a squad with more than a 100 players ( I have several such squads) and want to exchange 2 players out for I in? Will the transfer go through?
Say no to the cap!

To those who are saying caps are a bad idea your bloody half wits!!! The argument that they dont exist in real life is awful! They dont exist because NO club can afford to have over 100players on their books on 1000+ a week! Its a joke! And it ruins it for the smaller clubs, as they can sign the younger players in the lower leagues and then make a profit by selling them on in the future!
I do believe clubs and players should have reputation levels aswell to stop a 90+ rated players playing in div 4!! It should be along the lines on div 1 teams 60 - 99, div 2 teams 60 - 91, div 3 teams 60 - 87, div 4 teams 60 - 85.
If teams get relegated with good players the players should hand in a transfer request and the team should have to sell at a reasonable price, similar to what would happen in real life!!!
ps.
BLOODY LOVE SM!!!!!!!

caps on players, im sitting on the fence, but i will say this iv got 18 to 22 players in all 3 of my teams , and it can be annoying when u go for a player who is in a squad of 40 plus and is not getting a game for the team he is playing for
but i will say this if a player in the prem league is at a club and does not play at least 10% of that seasons league games then he can then leave on a free transfer so maybe sm could bring this player option into the game
this would then force sm managers to play there squads or face loosing a player on a free , only apply to 1st team players , not youth team

i am managing a team in the english league 797 and within this league there is 1 inparticular manager who is buying and hogging alot of half decent youngsters, (crewe alexandra) he now has roughly 60 players in his youth and about 25 in his squad, when will this new rule be put in place because this manager is putting me off the game.
21. jake | October 22nd, 2008 at 7:43 am
jimmy mac does indeed have a goood idea
22. jake | October 22nd, 2008 at 7:47 am
ian good idea!, wills also good idea, although a player cap may not be the answer you have to agree that something has to be done as certain players are spoiling thegame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
