Who is currently the No1 goalkeeper in the world?

February 20th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

Since the end of World War II, the world has seen some truly great goalkeepers in Lev Yashin, Dino Zoff, Gordan Banks, Sepp Maier, Ricardo Zamora, and Peter Schmeichel to name but a few.

The above named players can be considered as all time greats in their position due to what they achieved at both club and international level. Take the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Lev Yashin, in 812 career games for Dynamo Moskva, he kept a remarkable 480 clean sheets.

Arguably the three top keepers at the momet are Gianluigi Buffon, Peter Čech, and Iker Casillas. Forgot about goalkeepers like David James, Dida, Gregory Coupet, Oliver Kahn etc, as they do not cut the mustard compared to the three I have mentioned.

Gianluigi Buffon, Peter Čech, and Iker Casillas are not even considered to be at the peak of their careers (in relation to a goalkeeper), but already have accumulated between them:

  • 8 league titles;
  • 4 domestic cups;
  • 1 UEFA Cup;
  • 2 European Cups;
  • 1 European Supercup;
  • 1 Intercontinental Cup;
  • and 1 FIFA World Cup.

Quite an impressive combined CV beween the three of them, and I am sure most goalkeepers would love to have at least a handful of achievements from the above list on their own CV.

The question is though, out of  Gianluigi Buffon, Peter Čech, and Iker Casillas, who is currently the No goalkeeper in the world?

Gianluigi Buffon is now 30 years old, and for a goalkeeper is still considered young and not even at the peak of his career. So for someone of his age to have countless trophies under his belt (including the 2006 FIFA World Cup), as wel as 80 caps for the Italian national team, he must be quite a special keeper.

Buffon made his debut for Parma aged 17 years, in 1995, making his Serie A debut against AC Milan. During his time at Parma he helped them to numerous top six finishes, and also the UEFA Cup. Six years later he transferred from Parma to Juventus for a world-record goalkeeper’s fee of €52 million. Buffon has continued to develop into one of the worlds best keepers whilst at Juventus, and will continue to add to his already impressive CV.

Petr Čech is the youngest of the three goalkeepers selected by SM, being 25 years old, and is still considered a baby in terms of goalkeeping. Yet, despite his age, he already has quite a remarkable CV which he has accumulated in his three and a half years at Chelsea.

Like Buffon, Čech made his senior-level debut as a 17-year-old, for local side FK Chmel Blšany in 1999. A move followed to Sparta Praha (in 2001) where he set a national record by going 855 minutes without conceding a goal. He only spent one season at the Letná before joining Stade Rennais for a reported fee of €5m. Again his stay was short lived, and in 2004 he joined the ‘Russian Revolution’ at Chelsea for a bargain  £7m. During his time at Chelsea he has really come into his own, and has developed into the world class goalkeeper which many had predicted back at the start of the decade.

Iker Casillas, like Petr Čech,  is still considered a baby in terms of goalkeeping. Yet, despite his age, he already has quite a remarkable CV which he has accumulated during his time at Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid.

Just like Buffon and Čech, Casillas made his debut for his club during his teens, when he was just 18 years old during the 1998-99 season. In 2000, he became the youngest-ever goalkeeper to ever play in a Champions League final, when Real Madrid defeated Valencia 3-0 four days after his nineteenth birthday. Since  Madrid’s 2-1 2002 Champions League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen he has been the clubs undisputed No1, and his performances after earned him the nickname of  ‘Saint Iker’ by the Los Merengues faithful.

Soccer Manager would like to know out of  Gianluigi Buffon, Peter Čech, and Iker Casillas, who is currently the No goalkeeper in the world?

Hands down, Buffon. He is brilliant. He has an amazing presence at Juventus, and one of my personal favourite goalkeepers. I have him in most of my setups, as i have 100% confidence he will put on a great performance on a regular, if not, permanent basis :D

  • 21. benreado (forum)  |  February 20th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Casillas is class, in a league of his own, imo.
Out of Buffon and Cech I’d have to go with Buffon.
btw, if anyone is looking for keepers for the future buy Antonio Adan, Rui patricio, or Joe Hart.

  • 36. Richard  |  February 20th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Me myself is a goalkeeper, and I know what qualites you need as a keeper. Gianluigi Buffon is the best, no doubts.

    My list:

    1. Buffon
    2. Casillas
    3. Cech

A few years ago Oliver Kahn would have been placed second, behind Buffon but before Iker Casillas.

What about Igor Akinfeev or Craig Gordon

  • 53. Daniel Humphrey  |  February 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Casillas has been world class for Real Madrid this season which is why they are top of La Liga. Cech and Buffon have been good but not world class. I think Craig Gordon, Maarten Stekelenberg, Gomes, Helton, Hugo Lloris, Manuel Neuer, Rene Adler, Joe Hart, Artur Boruc, Carlos Kameni, Marco Amelia and Timo Hildebrand are amongst the wiorld best goalkeepers and could be the world’s best goalkeepers

  • 54. Jacob O'Hara  |  February 21st, 2008 at 4:39 pm

I think it’s Casillas this season. He has been in fantastic form so far and also was amazing last season.

Buffon is no doubt a great ‘keeper, but with his back problems now, he is far from reliable.

Cech has had a fairly quiet season so far IMO but I remember when he had that awesome run without conceding a goal.

In general? Casillas. Without a doubt.

  • 55. michael roberts  |  February 21st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

i dont really watch any apart from english football and if u base the vote on recent preformences then i would say Almunia is currently the best in the leauge but since he is injured i think it would have to go to David James

i think at the minute david james then coupet and kameni

    one two three

PETR CECH is the best by far…….ustari will be great in five years and so will akinfeev but cech is the best. van der sar and reina are amongst the worst

  • 63. ciaran  |  February 21st, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Has to be Petr Cech,he came back to play for Chelsea during the season last year after a head injury that doctors said could end his career.AND he still kept a great keeper record for that season!

  • 64. david  |  February 21st, 2008 at 8:51 pm

  • 65. Dan  |  February 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm

SOARES JULIO CESAR!! hardly any people have mentioned him, i don’t know why. I think he is just as good as Cech, Buffon and Casillas in my opinion.

  • 66. Bridgey  |  February 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm

    1) casillas
    2)buffon

A upcoming star is joe hart (man city) and carson can not be in the top 20 because he is awful!!!

  • 67. frank  |  February 21st, 2008 at 9:44 pm

David james plays for a team that gets twice as much trouble than these 3 keepers and he had the clean sheet record in the best league in the world. out of these

    1.cech
    2.buffon
    3.casillas

Craig Gordon is the next star he is so good.

  • 71. bibq  |  February 21st, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Considering Buffon is the oldest of the 3 and has had a longer career thus proving himself over many more years than the rest I’ll give him the #1 spot. Add to that one of the best world cups of any keeper conceeding only 2 goals for the entire tornament a penalty and a own goal.

His performances since the scandal has been outstanding. He definatly does not have the best defences in front of him this season, since the mass exodus of players like Zambrotta, Cannovaro, Thuram etc. and has single handedly saved Juve points in many games.

It would have to be Buffon all the way.

  • 72. bibq  |  February 21st, 2008 at 10:28 pm

oh yeah, and SM I think you forgot to add that Buffon won the Champions League player of the tornament the year they lost the final to AC Milan.

I don’t know how many keepers have won that award, pretty impressive though.

  • 73. Rich  |  February 21st, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Buffon is the clear leader in terms of best Goalkeeper in the world at the moment, has been for a number of years and will be for a few more years to come.

    That to me is undisputed.

Cech was a relative unknown until he went to Chelsea, Buffon was and still is known to millions and millions of people. Personally I think Casillas has faded over the last couple of years but as he’s still young he has plenty of time to reach the highest peak.

I think when those 3 Goalkeepers are gone we will see a different class of goalkeeper.

I don’t think anyone can dispute that even those 3 though cannot touch the true proper legends of Goalkeepers, and I don’t think there will ever be, in my lifetime anyway, any other keeper who can rank up beside those true legends.

  • 74. vladan  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 am

    Casillas.Young,Talented And Of COurse Good

  • 75. Matthew Harding  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 am

    Buffon definitly.

Cech is a good keeper but not on the same level as Buffon. I don’t think any of the keepers in the English game are #1. Not sure whats the big deal with David James is too. Sure on his day he is world class but he is far too inconsistant.

  • 76. louis  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 8:01 am

well i say these are my top five

    1.reina
    2.buffon
    3.casillas
    4.cech
    5.carson

  • 77. Yesbruv  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 9:31 am

    1. Casillias,
    2. Buffon,
    3. Reina,
    4. Cech,
    5. Craig Gordan,

    THE BEST!

  • 78. FA CHAIRMAN  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 9:38 am

I THINK THAT CASILLIAS IS THE BEST, HE IS THE YOUNGER OF THE THREE AND ALREADY HAS ACHIEVED SO MUCH. HE SAVES NEARLY EVERY SHOT.

BUFFON IS SECOND BEST, CECH THIRD, HE HAS LOST HIS FORM BUT DEFINITELY IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD

  • 79. steveyb  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm

    david james all the way!!!
if you look at current form he has to one of the top in the world.
he has had a lond and successful career both at club and international level. we all know that football is a team sport but with a defence like portsmouths you have to wonder where there success is coming from?? DAVID JAMES!! it doesnt take a genious to work it out. so i say rubbish to the likes of the so called top 3 goal keepers. David james is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 80. bowlheaducccca  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm

david james is the beast by far at the moment. game after game he wins portsmouth the game with crucial saves. but my top 3 has to be

    cech
    casillias
    buffon

  • 81. Gavin Mc Nally  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Where Is David James He’s On Brilliant Form Do You Have A Clue About Football!!

  • 82. Robs  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Rogerio ceni is the best. Boruc is rubbish. If celtic have such a good goalie/strikeforce why are they 2nd 2 rangers? Also cech is a good goalkeeper but he has terry and alex infront of him and he has a reputation that makes strikers panic when 1/1. Cassilas is a good keeper to but he is young and the best is still to come. Buffon has been in serie b for the past year and they aren’t exactly littered with quality. What makes him good is he doesn’t show off like boruc

  • 83. Naji  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Oliver Kahn and no one else! He is the best goalkeeper in the world, he’s getting old now but still, HIS DIVES ARE THE MOST SPECTACULAR! He inspired me to become a goali….2)buffon 3)Reina 4)James 5)casillias

  • 84. ant  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 6:36 pm

i fink joe hart coz he a prospect on already world class

  • 85. sergiu23  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    Robinson Zapata from Steaua Bucharest

  • 86. Joga Bonito  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

For me the Top 5 are

    1. Iker Casillas ( Spanish )
    2. Petr Čech (Czech )
    3. Gianluigi Buffon ( Italian )
    4. José Manuel Reina ( Spanish )
    5. David James ( English )

One for the future is:- Joe Hart ( English )

  • 87. Peter O' Sullivan  |  February 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I think we’re 4getting about Shay Given. He’s definatley up there and in my opinion 2nd best in the Premiership barr Petr Cech.
    1. Casillas
    2. Cech
    3. Buffon
    4. Given
    5. Reina

In my opinion, Shay Given is the most consistent Goalkeeper in the Premier League and without him Newcastle would probably be in the Championship as their defence is shocking.
However, I know he is 38 but, David James is in the form of his life.
And Petr Cech hasn’t been the same since he had a meeting with a goalpost at the Madjeski Stadium last year.
I think his confidence is lacking slightly.
Otherwise, Buffon and Casillas are two world-class keepers.
They always have been and always will be until they retire from the game.

    1) Buffon
    2) Cech
    3) Casillas

Joe Hart could become a very good goalkeeper as he is still only 20 years old!

  • 93. Shane  |  February 23rd, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Cech at the minute isnt near Cassilas or Buffon. For me Casillas is the best but what about Steele?!!! Played for Barnsley vs Liverpool!

  • 94. far  |  February 23rd, 2008 at 2:57 pm

    Buffon by far

  • 95. luke  |  February 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Peter Schmeichel is the best eva goalkeeper and i think his son Kasper will b the nxt best, but at the moment van der sar is defo the best goaly he has bin playin world class lately !!

  • 97. Joshua Minshall  |  February 24th, 2008 at 11:37 am

I think that the best keeper in the world at this current time isnt buffon or cech, personally i think it has got to be david james.

James has been play exceptionally well for club and has regained his england place as capello thinks hes better than robinson.

Just thought id tell you my thoughts :)

  • 98. David  |  February 24th, 2008 at 11:42 am

  • 102. sid  |  February 24th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

i think casillas is the best as soain is the most attacking league in the world, and i fit wasn’t for casillas most of the matches wud end as 1-1 as real madrid dnt score much against strog opponents but they r the best team and casillas the best and buffon second followed by cech, he is awful i think against aresnal in december or january he was the worst player of the game and i think he shud be rated 95 casillas 97 and buffon 96 or buffon and casillas 96 and cech 95 as he isn’t equal to them

  • 103. Oliver Griffiths  |  February 24th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

What about David Jamo. He’sa lengend. But I voted Iker Callisas!

  • 104. Steve Gibson  |  February 24th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Lets be fair, you couldn’t argue against who ever won this poll could you? All 3 can put forward a strong claim but my vote goes with Casillas, the guy gets better and better every season.

  • 105. Manzy  |  February 25th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

i think it is only Gianluigi Buffon who can be number one in the world >>>>>> watch 2006 FIFA World Cup
just 2 games out of clean sheet
one of them because of the defense & the second is penalty
absolutely Buffon is the best goalkeeper in the world

  • 106. AMJAD  |  February 26th, 2008 at 11:53 am

In my view its Petr Cech….for the Great reflexes he shows when the opposition has the ball in the BOX………Statitics don’t always tell the tue story and they shud not be the only criterion for judjement……

  • 107. ramone  |  February 26th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

omg CECH is by Far da best keeper in the world

  • 110. Kern  |  February 27th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

    cech is definatly

  • 111. dylan  |  February 27th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

arthur boruc must be in the top 5…only reason he is not in most peoples top 5 is because he plays in the SPL. until henrik larsson left celtic and played in la liga and the premiership he was not rated. it will be the same with boruc when he leaves celtic and moves to a big league.

    my top five would be:

    1-casillas
    2-cech
    3-buffon
    4-boruc
    5-cesar

  • 112. Nathan B  |  February 27th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Buffon is without doubt the best goalkeeper in the world consistency is why ive chose him and if juve were still in the champions league more people would vote for him because of the exposure he gets.
David James is a monster the saves he pulls out are mind boggling and at 38 its a dire shame that he has only just started to find consistency but to be a great goalkeeper you have to be consistent over a number of seasons but on current form he is the best as no one is better on their day.

  • 113. jack  |  February 28th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

most of you all say cech, buffon and casillas who are all quality keepers, but one fantastic young keeper you might not of heard of is igor akinfeev who is a brilliant young russian goalkeeper. hes of course not the best keeper in the world now, but i think in 5 years time he could be. at the moment i think gianluigi buffon is the best keeper in the world

  • 114. mike  |  March 29th, 2008 at 7:01 am
