UEFA Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament

June 30th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

Euro 2008 has now officially ended, and UEFA have named their UEFA Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament. Before I continue with this article I would like to congratulate Spain on claiming their second trophy, and the style of football they played in the final (and during the rest of the competition) epitomized the way the game should be played.

The UEFA Technical Team named its UEFA EURO 2008 Team of the Tournament, and it is no surprise that no fewer than nine Spanish players were named in the final 23. The UEFA Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament is:

  • Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Iker Casillas (Spain), Edwin van der Sar (Netherlands).
  • Defenders: Bosingwa (Portugal), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Carlos Marchena (Spain), Pepe (Portugal), Carles Puyol (Spain), Yuri Zhirkov (Russia).
  • Midfielders: Hamit Altıntop (Turkey), Luka Modrić (Croatia), Marcos Senna (Spain), Xavi Hernández (Spain), Konstantin Zyryanov (Russia), Michael Ballack (Germany), Cesc Fàbregas (Spain), Andrés Iniesta (Spain), Lukas Podolski (Germany), Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands).
  • Forwards: Andrei Arshavin (Russia), Roman Pavlyuchenko (Russia), Fernando Torres (Spain), David Villa (Spain).

If you would like to know how they came to their decision then you can visit this link from their official site.

The UEFA Technical Team also named Xavi Hernández as their UEFA EURO 2008 Player of the Tournament. Personally I would have given that accolade to his compatriot Marcos Senna who protected the best defence in the tournament, and provided a base which allowed arguably the most creative midfield in international football to express themselves. Senna was also the glue that held together the rightful winners, reading the play expertly and starting the majority of Spain’s fluid attacks.

Do you agree with  the UEFA Technical Teams UEFA Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament?

Well carrying on from the above I would like to offer you my starting XI of the tournament using a 4-1-4-1 formation:

  • Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Spain).
  • Defenders: Hamit Altıntop (Turkey), Yuri Zhirkov (Russia), Carlos Marchena (Spain), Carles Puyol (Spain).
  • Midfielders: Marcos Senna (Spain), Xavi Hernández (Spain), Michael Ballack (Germany), Lukas Podolski (Germany), Andrei Arshavin (Russia).
  • Forwards: David Villa (Spain).
  • Subs Bench: Edwin van der Sar (Netherlands), Cesc Fàbregas (Spain), Andrés Iniesta (Spain), Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands), Luka Modric (Croatia), Semih Şentürk (Turkey), Roman Pavlyuchenko (Russia).

Who would be included in your starting XI of the tournament, and who would you say your Player of the Tournament was?

i think turan arda of turkey had a cracking tournament and was the heartbeat of the team, one of the main reasons they got to the semi was due to his outstanding performances even at the age of 21! i think aleksander anyukov also had a good tournament, zhirkov faded towards the end

I also think that David Villa was rubbish apart from his first game, I can’t see how in the world everyone puts him in… Agains Sweden he scored a goal and that was it, after that… nothing.
Other players that stood out for me:
Casillas (picking between him and Buffon is… impossible)
    Volkan
    Lahm
    Puyol
    Pepe
    Sérgio Ramos
    Semak
    Tuncay Sanli
    Arshavin
    Deco
    Pavlyuchenko
    Podolski
    Ballack
    Modric
    R & N Kovac
    Pranja
    Servet Çetin
    Mehmet Aurélio
    Nihat
    Arda Turan
Iniesta (in the final 2 games only)
As for Xavi (who was considered the player of the tournament), I thought he was consistently good but never brilliant and far from being the best player in the Euro.
