UEFA Euro 2008 Finals Draw

December 3rd, 2007 by SM Dev (ste)

The draw for Euro 2008 has now been made, and World Cup finalists France and Italy must be cursing UEFA’s seeding system after been drawn in the so called ‘Group of Death’ along with Romania and The Netherlands.

This year UFEA have calculated the seedings on the basis of results in the qualification tournaments for the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008 (surprisingly they did not take into account performances in the 2006 World Cup where both France and Italy reached the final, and top seed Greece did not even qualify for the tournament).

Switzerland and Austria (as co-hosts), and Greece (as defending champions), were seeded first automatically, and they were joined by The Netherlands who were seeded based on their UEFA coefficient. This new format has led to some interesting groups which will surely raise a few eyebrows, and also be the focus of discussion leading up to the tournament. Draw in full:

Group A –

  • Switzerland
  • Czech Republic
  • Portugal
  • Turkey

Group B –

  • Austria
  • Croatia
  • Germany
  • Poland

Group C –

  • Netherlands
  • Italy
  • Romania
  • France

Group D –

  • Greece
  • Sweden
  • Spain
  • Russia

The opening match will see co-hosts Switzerland entertain the Czech Republic on 7th June, 2008, at the St. Jakob-Park stadium, Basel.

What do you think of new seeding format for the draw? Now the draw has been made who do you think will win the tournament? If your country has not qualified for the tournament will you be supporting another nation?

France winners, Itlay runners up. Looks like a boring euro 2008, lets hope theres lots of good movies on, or England do a tour of the Americas.

And this was supposed to be Van Der Sar’s last international competition for the Oranje! :o

I can’t really see how anyone can predict the results of group C, although I do not extremely feel that great after knowing the Oranje are teamed up with Les Bleues, Romania and the Italians.

I just hope Netherlands win another Euro competition just before VDS retires :P

i think group d will b the hardest with current champions greece seeded with the likes of spain and russia who knocked england out of the tournament italy and france will dominate group c the germans will top group b and the portugues will go though as group winners in group a if austria and the swiss end up playing each other it will b interesting cause 2 teams hosting one tournment has never played each other i am putting my money on the italians though they had a fantastic world cup and can relly show there class again but i can also c greece or portugal getting to the final as-well it will b an interesting euro 2008 no matter who wins it and how
