Euro 2008: Could we see another upset?
March 27th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)
Like with Euro 92, Euro 2004 produced an upset no one could have predicted, and this resulted in outsiders Greece lifting the trophy after beatings hosts Portugal 1-0 in their own backyard.
Prior to Euro 2004 Greece had only qualified for one World Cup (this being in 1994), and one European Championship (this being in 1980) - however in only their third international tournament they beat hosts Portugal 1-0 to lift the twelfth European Championship.
This was not a fluke result as on their way to the final they beat Portugal 2-1 in the opening match, managed to hold one of the favourites Spain to a 1-1 draw, then beat holders France 1-0 in the Quarter-finals, before knocking out the Czech Republic with a silver goal, to reach their first ever final.
The goal scored by striker Angelos Charisteas after 57 minutes caused one of the biggest upsets in history, and helped Greece lift their first ever piece of silverware:
This year the usual suspects are being mentioned for contention of the trophy in Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Spain et al. However Soccer Manager would like to know if you think we could see another upset this year, and could we see a team like Switzerland, Russia, Turkey or similar lift the trophy?

I think this is anyones tournament. I strongly fancied Croatia for a long time, however it became a bit annoying when everyone else jumped on the Croatia bandwagon after they beat England. Obviously the loss of Eduardo is massive for them and could cost them. I still think they are capable of making the semi finals and who knows, maybe even beyond! They have a fantastic coach and some brilliant individuals all nicely integrated into a top class efficient unit. Good look to them!

Romania are for sure dark horses, might stick a couple of euros on them. but my tip to win the tournament are germany. came so close in the world cup. italy as good a team as they are won’t win the two big tournaments in a row and donadoni isn’t the brightest manager, i mean leaving del boy out of the squad is a really poor call. if romania don’t get through the group and france do i can see france doing well too. as for portugal i don’t see them winning, everyone goes on how ronaldo will win it for them but the only reason ronaldo is playing so well is because of ferguson’s system at man utd, he won’t replicate that form for portugal. and spain will bottle it as usual even though i think they have the squad to win it. italy, romania (france), portugal,
germany semi finals

I fancy Germany for the win.
They have a massive squad, more strength in depth then they had 2 years ago.
They are like a machine, they got physical power, technical ability and good mentality.
I think Gomez will be a big hit for them!!!
Altough i also think Netherlands could perform well, als France and Austria as the underdog (watch Ivanschitz!!)

well i think the tournament will be open….and whoever plays better on the day or a bit of luck will decide wins. friendlies early year form count for nuttin. rem eng 5 - 1 germany, yes the german got 2 the final of the world cup. wat am sayin is tht only after the opening games of the tournamnet we will have a better idea.
however i do fancy spain this time round as i feel the youngsters playin the world cup 06 have now matured and developed. spain will also benefit frm the premiereship wiv the likes of torres, fabregas and alonso….they wud ave been the first name on capello sheets if they were english. lookin at the groups ere my prediction:
group A - the swiss will go thru as they will be hard to beat at home. the other place will be between portugal and turkey.
group B - co host austria will go out..and it will be a easy group for the germans and croats.
group C - OMG wat a group. however i feel the italians will benefit frm winning the WC and go thru wiv france and holland fighting for 2nd. the opening games will be the key to who go thru frm this group.
group D- spain will go thru wiv any 1 of the 3.
1) spain
2) italy
3) germany
4) croatia
5) france

Switzerland and Croatia are the biggest favourites for upsets. I don’t think Greece will defend their trophy. I think Italy will win by beating Portugal 2-1 in the final.

Romania have the hardest group but I think hey will get out of it. If so, they have very high chances of going far or even winning it. Yesterday’s 3-0 victory against Russia shows that their squad is playing well and they are prepared for this.
