Talent Scout: UEFA U-19 Championship 2008
August 6th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)
The UEFA U-19 Championship 2008 tournament was held in the Czech Republic this year, and it was contested between 14th to 26th July, 2008. Germany lifted the UEFA U-19 Championship trophy after beating Italy 3-1, and in doing so claimed their first ever title.
Now that the tournament has ended with Germany’s victory over Italy, I will try and point out some players that caught my eye during the tournament, and also let you know who uefa.com choose.
The following players were named by uefa.com as those that caught their eye during the two week tournament (and I have included their SM rating and position were applicable):
- Mihail Aleksandrov (Bulgaria) - CSKA Sofia AM 74 (19);
- Vlagyimir Komán (Hungary) - Sampdoria RM 78 (19);
- Ben Mee (England) - Manchester City;
- Francisco Mérida (Spain) - Arsenal LM 78 (18);
- Tomáš Necid(Czech Rep) - Jablonec F 78 (18);
- Savio Nsereko (Germany) - Brescia W 71 (19);
- Stefano Okaka Chuka (Italy) - Bologna CF 82 (18);
- Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Greece) - Olympiacos CB 72 (16);
- Silvano Raggio Garibaldi (Italy) - Genoa DM 70 (19);
- Richard Sukuta-Pasu (Germany) - Bayer Leverkusen.
It is no surpirse to see two players from Germany named on uefa.com, and as well as the two mentioned above you can also throw the Bender twins Lars and Sven into the list as they were the heartbeat of the German side.
In the final the Italians had as much talent as the Germans, and Italy have some talent emerging which can only be good for the Azzurri. The players who who look like they have a bright future in my opinion (sorry for duplicating some of the information on uefa.com) are goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo, midfielders Andrea Mazzarani, Silvano Raggio Garibaldi and Andrea Poli, and the attacking trio of Fernando Forestieri, Stefano Okaka Chuka, and Alberto Paloschi.
Also if you look outside the two finalists the other players of note that caught my eye were Daniel Parejo, Martin Zeman, Radim Řezník, and Emilio Nsue Lópe.
If you managed to watch any of the tournament you might agree on some of the names I have mentioned along with those on uefa.com. If you didn’t catch the UEFA U-19 Championship 2008 tournament then feel free to scout some of the names mentioned within this article, and you never know you might end up with a potential gem.
Please Note: There is no guarantee that the player(s) named within this article will have an increase in rating, as the above information is my opinion, and not that of the SM Researchers. It is also your own responsibility if you decide to take a chance on the information I have provided.

“Vincenzo Fiorillo is on SM, so he could be linked in the post.”
If you look at the links they are links to these players’ Wikipedia pages, not SM pages.
Other than Germany i found Spain and Italy the best teams to watch with some great talents in each, and had Fran Merida not been suspended for the first game i think Spain could have done well [instead they were knocked out at the group stages.]
It was also good to see Papadopoulos finally play, having snapped him up on SM without ever seeing him in action, however i am very happy with the purchase now.
