Talent Scout: Lertxundi Koikili

December 13th, 2007 by SM Dev (ste)

Not many clubs from La Liga look at players in their mid twenties plying their trade in the lower reaches of Spanish football, but then again not every club is unique and has a cantera policy like Athletic Bilbao.

During the summer Los Leones did exactly that, and signed unknown 26 year old left back Lertxundi Koikili. He was signed from Segunda B (third tier) club Sestao River in time for the start of the 2007/08 La Liga Season.

Koikili was originally signed for Bilbao as Asier del Horno’s back-up, but as football never turns out as you predict, del Horno is now Koikili’s back-up. Del Horno started the season as Bilbao’s left-back, but after a few shakey displays, was replaced by Koikili.

Since the start ofOctober, Koikili (who had been playing in the lower reaches of Spanish football prior to this season) has made the left-back position his own, and impressive performances against Barcelona and Real Madrid have strengthened his position within the starting XI.

The 26 year old Left-back is currently a 76 rated player, and if he manages to keep his place in the Rojiblancos side and continue with his impressive performances, then he will surely get a rating increase when the La Liga  changes come round.
