New Clubs Added: Welsh Premier League
March 14th, 2007 by SM Dev (ste)
The researchers at SM are always looking at adding new leagues to their ever growing database (DB). Over the past fortnight, teams from the mighty Welsh Premier League have been added to the DB.
The most well know Welsh club which has been added, is TNS. They used to be called Total Newtwork Solutions (after their sponsor), but due to a company takeover, BT pulled the plug on the sponsorship, so the club renamed themselves The News Saints.
Since the turn of the century, TNS have been one the most successful Welsh clubs, with three titles, and currently sit top of the Welsh Premier League, and look on course for a fourth title.
Their main rivals, Barry Town, have seven titles to their name (since the launch of the Welsh Premier League in 1992), but in 2003 they went into administration, with debts of £1 million. This has lead to their downfall, and in 2004, they were relegated to the Welsh League for the 2004/05 season.
People who are not familiar with the Welsh League, will be surprised at some of the club names, as they are very unusual, the most notable being NEWI Cefn Druids, and Connah’s Quay Nomads.
Most of the players in the Welsh Premier League, will be unknown, but one player who most managers will be familiar with, is Clayton Blackmore, who is still going strong at Prthmadog.
The majority of players which have been added, are in the 60-70 rating bracket, as the majority of the clubs are part time, and we felt the standard of the league is similar to that of the English Conference.
