Gold Championship 17 - Terek Grozny

July 22nd, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

I recently decided to resign from Juventus in Gold Championship G17 (GC17).  Juventus were a team that I had been managing for 11 turns, and I have now taken on a new club in the form of Terek Grozny in the Russian second division. I am writing this article to explain the reasons for this choice as some of you may see this as a strange move.

As you may know getting a top club in a Gold Championship is extremely hard as generally everyone wants them - maybe the smaller clubs are the way forward?

When I was the manager of Juventus it was extremely easy to make a list of targets (getting them is a bit more difficult), and as a big club you can generally make offers for well known players which you know are going to be a good buy. However, as a smaller club it tests a wider range of managerial skills and not just tactics.

As a smaller club you have to shop around, and scout for players which you think will be a worthy investment. You need to make sure a player is in your price range. With a bigger club you start with £20-30 million, whereas with a smaller club you are lucky to get £2 million. Therefore you need to spend a lot more wisely.

In regards to wages, a big club can more or less afford to pay any players wages, but as Terek Grozny I know I will have to take wages into consideration (more than I would previously whilst at Juventus) in order to stay out of debt, and keep a healthy balance to enable me to bring in new faces.

Also I have managed plenty of big clubs in the past and I buy the same old players and do the same old deals all the time, maybe this was the time to try something new, and put my managerial skills to the test with a smaller club?

Finally, i’m going to have a lot more fun managing a smaller club, doing research on players etc, and that is what this game is about - enjoyment!

I will keep you updated at regular intervals with (hopefully) my successes with Terek Grozny.

Matt Jewiss

ok good luck with that…but i think this is just a way to make the managers take smaller clubs…unfortunatelly the mentality is the same at all of them so they all want barca real manchester etc this won t change…i like the middle european teams like sporting tottenham lazio lyon e.g.

  • 4. radu  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm

and if you haven t notice you can really find good players all over the world this guy probably only knows the best players from england spain germany etc but i ll tell you what i found very good players in secunda division swedish division or the maxican championship …matt jewiss i m afraid you haven t convinced anyone with this article …because u didn t say any advantages ….but…whatever

c’mon get off his back a little he is only simply tring something different and if it works who knows other people may get inspriaton not likely but it might change a few people’s opinions about smaller clubs

  • 11. lil_kick_kid  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Lol, it’s ok to quit if you’ve got a reason to switch teams, but you don’t need to tell the world.

Shels being narrow again by sticking with something in the Scottosh league, if youd have read the article youd have seen it was 11 games not 1, pay attention

You guys who are bashing him are a bunch of assholes. (Sorry if i cant swear but its true). It takes a lot more skill to manage a smaller club then it does to manage a larger one. Not only dont you have $20+ mil to buy players, you also dont have players that are ranked at least a 90 maybe even an 80 in some cases. The point of this game is to be a good manager and make your club exceed expectations and go further then anyone expects. Not to all look for the best club and then change nothing with them. Thats being a cheat. You arent a good manager. You are lucky someone quit a good club and you got control.

Matt, I look foward to seeing how you progress with your club. And i commend you for switching from a higher ranked club to a less in the hopes to become a good manager. Now for all you others who are bashing him, how many of you control one of the top 15 clubs? I bet every single one of you.

Good luck with them….its a great challenge

  • 19. Romanian MIR  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I agree with Darren , I’m managing Milan and Inter on my main account this is true but I have a smaller team , if I can call so my Ajax team and I have some extraordinary achievements after one year of SM but in the same time I tooked a CFR Cluj team , it’s a pretty unknown team here , but they are the champs from Romania and after 3 months I got some great players like Vucinic , Montolivo , Borriello , Aurelio , Nani and now I’m leading the 4th div by far

This is why I created a new account only for this reason , I’m not a GM so I can’t manage more than 3 clubs but I wanna prove that I’m a good manager , so I’ll try with this team where I have a very small stadium and after every turn I have less money than before
As I said I try to win cups and the division and I sell some talents for milions although I bough them for 10-100k

Respect to those who try to make something important with a big club but I hate when they lie about the teams

I agree and like you i have many top teams but decided on celta vigo in the spanish second in GC8. i’m second in the league have no players over the age of 21. will be interesting next season in the 1st but hey if i can stay up that will be a challenge well and truly accomplished.

It does make it alot of fun and when you beat a so called big boy it means all the much more.

    Have fun

  • 21. Romanian MIR  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 5:46 pm

In the last sentence I wanted to say with a small club not with a big one cos with a big one , everybody can win trophies

  • 22. TJ  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Darren, what you said was basically a load of old garbage. How are you not a good manager if you manage to be a success with a “big team”? I did a treble in a World Championship with Barcelona, winning the Div 1 title, Cup and Shield. Sure, I had Barcelona, but noone else was able to win those things and I’ve also seen plenty of Barcelonas at the bottom of the table due to poor tactics and so on. So don’t mouth off saying that if you manage a “big” team you can’t be a good manager or can’t prove yourself because you can. Just because you have a good squad to start with doesn’t mean you will win all your games or find it easy, you still have to prove you’ve got good tactical knowledge.

Matt, if you want to take over Terek Grozny then that’s up to you, but you didn’t need to announce it to the world.

  • 23. Darren  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 6:05 pm

I nerver said that didn’t make you a good manager. I just said it takes a little more managering skill to manage a small club. Obviously if you win you are doing something right. And i congradulate you on winning. I just think it takes more skill to have to buy players and have them make a difference then to start with the players who make a difference.

  • 24. Matt  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 6:08 pm

I would just like to say, i didnt announce it to the world, i announced it to the people who are interested in my success or failure, if your not interested then dont write anything.
I did this because i wanted to share successes, and because Toggs is no longer doing his one with Ericress (spelling) so i am filling the gap.
Finally Ste chose to submit it on the blog not me, i just sent it to him, he thought it was good enough so thats good enought for me :)

HI MATT JEWISS HERE! (In style of Barry Scott on Cillit Bang advert).

I’ve been having problems at Juventus and instead of facing up to my problems I’ve decided to run away to the safe refuge of Terek Grozny, a team that only 3 people in the whole world have heard of.
I had too much money at Juventus! So I decided to take over Terek so I can do my famous Cillit Bang 1p coin test! That’s right! Terek only have 1p in the bank but using my tactical nous and superior man management skills I will soon turn them into the next Real Madrid. My autobiography entitled “Jewiss: Terek and me, the long hard struggle” will be out in all good bookstores very soon.

  • 32. Richard Wallace  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Nice one mate, seems there are a few more managers trying this. Im trying a similar thing with Stevenage, in the bottom English league of GC16. Much more of a challenge.

Ive kept my Ajax and Milan teams in 2 older GC’s, but ive dumped all my other Barca, Madrid’s etc in various other SM set ups as I found it wasn’t challenging enough. You know how easy it is to buy the players you want when your a bigger club. Now with Stevenage I can focus on all aspects of the team knowing every decision I make will have a real impact.

    Good luck!

  • 33. Sinny  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm

    Congrats Matty,

Glad to see your doing a good challenge.

For all the people doing negative comments can just all back off, he wrote it to Ste, like he said, he thought he was good enough so why not?

It’s obvious that some people are jealous because they have lived up to the challenge they wanted to start instead of quitting in like 2 games.. so Shels, if you think it’s attention seeking, why not just go ask someone to remove it if you’re so bothered? It seems like your wanting attention creating a reply like that.

Just ignore em Matty, you’ve done well, keep it up!

  • 46. miky  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 am

I gave up most of my big teams, I had 3 chelsea teams 4 real madrid and a few other big teams and i gave most of them up for small GC teams i vary from english 4th division, French 2nd division etc etc. It is more fun when you pick a small team because when you eventually build up your squad and start getting promoted etc you get a sense of acheivment.

I have a barcalona team and my lowest rated player is 93 i should dominate the league with them but im sitting mid table so i favour going smaller teams in the GC because it is more fun.

Scene from a famous film :

Matt jewiss is having a drink , drowning his sorrows after yet another defeat.
Foxy lady comes over and sits next to him.

Foxy Lady : So what’s your name ?
Matt Jewiss : The name’s Jewiss. . . Matt jewiss.
Foxy lady : Now where have I heard that name before ?

Matt Jewiss is so drunk he hasn’t noticed how foxy this lady is looking tonight. Normally he can’t get near foxy ladies . Never mind.

Matt Jewiss : Another one , Jeeves. Shaken not stirred.
Foxy Lady : It’s on the tip of my tongue.
Matt jewiss : ( thinking to himself) I’ll put her out of her misery. Her squeaky voice is getting on my nerves. ( He starts talking to her ) I’m the not-so-amzing secret agent. And also the manager on Soccer Manager who manages a team for one game but then quits after I lose 1-0 to Real Madrid who score in the 93rd minute. I should really have some patience.
Foxy lady : That’s it ! I forgot about your management skills . No-one could go with me if they couldn’t manage. Think about all the bills ! I’m pretty high - maintenance , you know . ( Storming out of the bar ) I NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY !!

    Good , eh ?

  • 49. lloyd  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 10:31 am

well to be honest ur all glory hunters ye having 1 big team might be fun but also the smaller teams are much better to play along with, i currently manage westham and i have completely reformed the clubs players and my next team will be northampton town which i will be making to the premier league within the next 5-8 seasons. i was looking at some of the best players in the world earlier and they were being sold for 96+ million for a normal club that is almost equivalant to a whole squad and this is being blown on 1 player.

i personally like the achievment of getting a low ranked club into the top flight as i do on the championship manager games i will most probally be bringing in a new signing once or twice a year but with a big club you just end up with hundreds of millions in the bank and all you do is search for 95-99 and theres your list of players to choose from and thats boring i like going for young players who i think will progress.

well i would agree i actually prefer building teams in the gold championships

i manage 6 teams and none of them are really household names -

Sivasspor GC18, Vitesse Arnham GC17, Kaiserslautern GC16, Jaguares De Chiapas GC15, Beitar Jerusalem GC14, Djurgardens IF GC13

they are easier to manage and buy/sell players than the big teams

it takes skill to win trophies with any team for example

barcelona ( for them to win league they have to better teams like real madrid atletico valencia etc. results over 38 games

for them to win a cup if they play a semmingly smaller club in the final then surely that smaller club cant be bad because the club have knocked out bigger names in earlier rounds

  • 58. ian  |  July 24th, 2008 at 3:12 am

i set up a 2nd account to mananage my home town club hartlepool utd i must agree its a challenge as u dont have the money to start 2 to 3 mill only and with a gate of 7800 cap you dont get the money commig in so you have to be carefull, i had to sell about 8 players to make 2transfers 80 and 83 rating but the challenge comes from some possible targets turning you down as they dont want to drop divs,, but on the other hand if you do a good job other teams come in and ofer you a job
but before you say owt i have also got barca, everton [twice], and rangers, and i agree you do find ,i tend to go for the same players with these clubs because of the money and iv won trophys with these teams
but hartlepool is prob more enjoyable playing wise

    Hi Matt,
I too agree with you..I started with Wigan. My second team was Boca in World Champ. There i built a team of good young players. But when an offer came from Div1 Team Lyon i quit Boca. This is the worst decision i’ve made in SM. I know how much satisfaction you get since i manage Luton Town in Div 4 (EnglishChamp3)…A 1-0 Win against Cardiff is much satisfying than Lyon beating Barca 4-0..

I thought terek grozny was a name of a person
