Ideas & Suggested Improvements: Selecting a Team in a New Gold Championship

July 22nd, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

A few days after a new Gold Championship is created you will see people complaining that they did not get the team of their choice, and that the current method of selecting a team is unfair. However, the question is what is the best solution to selecting a team in a new Gold Championship?

Well there is a current debate ongoing within the SM Forum in relation to this, and you are all welcome to offer your suggestions and improvements.

Is there a way that everyone would get a chance to be able to take control of a team of their choice? Well there are numerous options available, and some of these are metioned within the releveant thread from the SM Forum, and also have been sent in via the suggestions page:

Option #1 - Leave it as it is and announce a date or time of creation, and state for example that Gold Championship 19 will be created Monday 28th July, 2008, at 17:00 Game Time.

Option #2 - Do not announce a date or time of creation, and just state for example that Gold Championship 19 will be created week commencing 28th July, 2008.

Option #3 - Do not announce a time of creation, and just state for example that Gold Championship 19 will be created on Monday 28th July, 2008.

Option #4 - Monitor and give managers a rating based on what clubs they are currently managing or have managed within the Gold Championships (to prevent managers from droping teams right before creation of a new setup). Then when a new Gold Championship opens up they would only be allowed to select a team lower rated then current/previous teams within Gold Championships.

Option #5 - Every Gold Member gets a starting number for example 100, and every team within the Gold Championships gets allocated a value based on how good they are. So when you select a team the higher rated the team is that you select the less points you would have for the next Gold Championship.

Option #6 - Create Gold Championships less frequently, and when a new one is due for creation create several at once.

Option #7 - Allow people to reserve clubs within a Gold Championship, and band clubs by strength of squad. For example band one could include clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United etc, band two could include clubs like Everton, Paris SG, Ajax etc, band three could include clubs like Wigan Athletic, AZ, Napoli etc, band four could include clubs like Leeds United, Bologna, Sheffield United and so forth. Then you would pay £x to reserve a club, and then be allocated one randomly from that band when the Gold Championship is created.

Please Note: Do not contact SM Support in relation to this topic as your ticket will be closed as this article is in relation to suggestions members of our community have sent in or are currently debating on the SM Forum.

I like the idea of number 3, but with the vote how it is atm I really can’t see that happening :(.

Option 4 is also good, but the disadvantage of that is that you would always get the same managers who were doing well as the top clubs. The other problem would be is if anyone was doing poorly with a club in a GC, they would want to quit them so there manager rating wasn’t too badly affected. Also, the best managers may want to take a challenge.

Option 5 seems fair enough so I’d be happy with that.

Option 7 for me would be the worst :(. We pay money for our GM which allows us to be in a GC then we’d have to pay more money on top. I wouldn’t be willing to do that. Also if someone does pay the money to get into band A, they may still end up with a team they don’t like. (eg. A Real madrid fan getting Atletico :o)

I’d much rather stay with what it is. There must be hundreds of gold members who want a top team, and only so many can actually get their wish, so some managers will always be unhappy. It’s all about luck and patience. Not everyone can get the team they want.

    I have voted option 3.

    Here is the forum thread:

    http://www.soccermanager.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26488

It needs to be changed and option 3 is like it first started and it was great but now it seems to be unfair and dissapointing on the whole.

Option 5 gets me second vote ;)

Sevens obviously gonna be chosen. Theres a nice little money earner for SM in there ;-)

If 7 is chosen it’ll ruin the game IMO. Half the gold members (if not more), including me, won’t want to pay more money to reserve a ‘group’, and this’ll ruin the game for us as we won’t be able to get any decent clubs in a gold setup.

I’ve no idea which option is the best but for me the creaton of the last gold championship was a non starter. It was created at 2.00am monday morning, not a good idea when you have to get up for work at 5.00am. If I’d have stayed up for that I would only get 3 hours sleep, when I got up at 5.00am all the primo teams had gone.

What amazes me is how some gold members manage to get top teams in several gold championships ! ! !

i think its joke, its not a fair way of sorting the teams.

i work like alot of managers on SM and i only go on-line in the eve so by the time i get to pick a team i only have several to choose from and they are all in the bottom leagues.

i have only one gold team and its huddersfield im always to late to get a top team, i think if you have two top teams in gold league you should not be able to have anymore top 30 teams for at least 5 gold set-ups.

a note to the SM - you have to make this gold set-up more equal for all managers. the options above are still not fair because paying money to reserve a team you may not even want is not the way to go. most managers probably want to run there favourite teams in a gold league.

Why not make it equal to all players. Have a lottery of some kind where people can put their names into the lottery and then SM randomly assigns managers to teams. Then we wouldn’t have people complaining about the same people getting the top teams in every GC and it would give every manager a fresh challenge with their new club.

  • 9. NEIL  |  July 22nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I think a good idea would be, the people wanting a club in a New GC register for it somehow, then get allocated a number and then once the GC starts the numbers are randomly assigned to a team and given to that mrmber, ie a lottery i suppose, u pick a number and get given a team.

It would stop the same people getting the prestige teams (Barca, Inter ETC) all the time, by clicking refresh 40 million times in the add a new team list to get the best.

We pay good money to play this online and therfor should be able to get a decent team in a new GC not just a World Championship/Club Championship etc.

A lot of this is sour grapes in that people are annoyed that certain people always have big teams and they struggle. I enjoy the excitement when refreshing and that has to be kept IMO.

The points thing is good, but people pay for GMs so should be allowed all the big teams they wish for.

I really hope that number one ends up winning the vote, although announcing a date and no time seems to be popular and I would be all for that as well

  • 11. eddie sarmento  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 1:18 am

The sensible thing is to just keep it as it is, if you don’t get the team you want tough luck, most people don’t anyway and make do with the remaning teams. I would suggest sm to keep option 1 but continue changing the times the gold setup is made avaliable.

Not announcing a creation time is silly, only the diehards would be sitting at the computer to get the best teams as usual.

Taking control of a smaller team is not a bad thing as long as you keep on winning with the team and hopefully a offer from another a club could come your way.

If option 7 was brought into play, then GC’s are ruined and not many would join them imo. We pay cash for GM and we expect with that GM package to get a team in GCs. Anyone who quits a team a few games into the GC imo are greedy and selfish. This might sound harsh but its true. A manager manages a team regardless of their strengths for crying out loud. I’d just opt for making GCs less so often!!!!

  • 13. alex bardsley  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 12:07 pm

option 7 would ruin the GCs.

  • 14. neil cole  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 12:14 pm

what you have to remember is not everyone can be on the net 24/7 so when starting a league at 2am etc people who work full time have no chance to get a chance at having a good team.

  • 15. neil cole  |  July 23rd, 2008 at 12:15 pm

dont get me wrong i have taken huddersfield and have been very successful with them in my first season on SM but i really would love to manage the team i support in a gold league.

  • 16. MESSIAH GODSPOWER  |  July 24th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I am a beginner in this game, but what i dont understand is why when selecting a clud it will be written that my reputation is not high enough. I need a very good setup

  • 17. Ben Read (forum)  |  July 24th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Here’s an idea which I posted on the forum which had a lot of positive feedback:

Option #8 - Create the Setup how it has always been done (listing time and date), but don’t list the teams underneath the country they play in. Just have one long list of teams in a random order so if you’re lucky enough to find a Man Utd the first place you look, you have more of a chance to take them over despite having a quite slow computer.

    Opinions please…..

  • 18. lew  |  July 25th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

There’s going to be winners & losers whatever option is chosen. We have to be realistic and accept we probably wont get the team we want in a GC. I have to admit that I do quite like the mad scramble for teams in those first few moments after a setup has been created, but obviously many cant be at their computers at the exact time the GC comes online. How about splitting the teams into 4 pots with an even spread of high, medium and low ranked teams and then stagger the release of those teams. E.G Pot 1 may contain Man U, Barca, Milan etc Pot 2 Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and so on Then pots would be released at different times of the day Pot 1 9am, Pot 2, 12pm, Pot 3 6pm and Pot 4 midnight or something similar. This solves time zone problems and people at work etc.
Sorry to have gone on a bit!!

  • 19. timmy c  |  July 25th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

i like Ben’s potion 8 and also like lew’s option but u would need to release the time of each pot.

wen a gc is set a date i really geet excited and always never miss 1 and cause of this i hav a man u and bayern munchin and yea i hav bad teams but i dont complain cause wen ur always hittin refresh ur always excited.
i want it 2 stay the same it is the dedicated people at get the teams and the lazy people moan. i done option 6 so less people cry and its easier to get a team but option 7 is messed up this wud make less gold members as they have to pay extra 2 compete in a gc so just keep it origanel cause der are poor ppl dat r gm’s and dey cant afford to pay more money it is expected that they shud compete in these!

dat was long lol :) !

I think they should tell us the time and date but creat like 5 at the same time or on one day they should creat a gold champ every hour so if you dont get the team you want you can try again

  • 22. steve mann  |  August 13th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

why not create a GC but only allow you to apply to be a manager in the setup then when the setup is full have a world cup type draw where a club is pulled from the pot and matched to a manager at random

another option give lower ranked clubs the first 3/4 days or week of setup to buy their players and perhaps give them more starting cash as they will have weaker teams

    any thoughts
