Ideas & Suggested Improvements: International Standard Setups

April 2nd, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

For some time the idea has been floated around regarding international management, and this is something which we plan to introduce at some point.

However to coincide with this summers European Championships, we are looking at the feasability of creating ‘International Standard Setups’, and possibily make these available via the SM Shop.

Three setup templates could be created along the lines of the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championships, and CONMEBOL Copa América. So we could create the SMFA International Cup, SMFA European Cup, and SMFA South American Cup.

The SMFA World Cup template could could include eight groups of four teams, with each team playing each other either once in a round-robin or possibly twice in a double round-robin, with the top two qualifying for the first knock-out stages leading all the way to the final. The thirty-two participating nations could be broken down as follows:

  • Europe 14 places;
  • Africa 5 places;
  • South America 6 places;
  • Asia 4 places;
  • North and Central America and Caribbean 3 places.

Obviously we would change the teams participating in the SMFA International Cup on a regular basis to add some variation to the tournament.

The SMFA European Cup template could follow the same format as the UEFA European Championships, and contain four groups of four teams, proceeded by the quarter-finals through to the final. An alternative is to  expand this competition and have eight groups of four teams, with each team playing each other either once in a round-robin or possibly twice in a double round-robin, with the top two qualifying for the first knock-out stages leading all the way to the final.

The SMFA South American Cup template could follow the same format as the CONMEBOL Copa América, and contain four groups of four teams, each team playing each other either once in a round-robin or possibly twice in a double round-robin, with the top two qualifying for the quarter-finals leading all the way to the final.

There would be questions surrounding how each 23-man squad is decided for each competition, and there is one option which could be feasible. The SMFA could select a preliminary 23-man squad based on the highest rated players for each position, and then the manager would have the option to swap any of these players for another player of a similar position using a drop down box which would display the top (say) 12 highest rated players for that position.

This would mean that if a side is not managed it would still have a strong 23-man squad for the tournament, and at the same time gives a managed team the option to pick ‘n’ mix his squad to his/her own liking. Obviously there would be a delay between the creation of the setup, and the tournament actually starting so that you can sort out your squad.

These new international setup templates could be available via the SM Shop, and there could be two possible prices for them. The first price of (say) £2.99 would allow you to select the first side within the international standard setup prior to it opening to the rest of the community. The second price of (say) £3.99 would allow you to select the first side within the international standard setup, and then it would remain closed and become a private/application setup to allow friends, work colleagues, family members or similar to compete alongside you. The setups could possibly last only for the duration of the tournament before it ends.

fabulous idea but wat about dat national teamz ?
e.g. wat r da african & asian nation teamz ??

  • 2. Offside  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 11:32 am

Believe it or not i was just thinking there would be something said regarding the International Setups. I thought it would have been a announcement as to when they would be created though.

The price sounds erm awesome aswell I wasnt expecting that :)

Actually wait i just read the last part ‘The setups could possibly last only for the duration of the tournament before it ends.’

By that do you mean thats it you pay your cash then after the tourny is done you have nothing for your money ?

I think this may be a good idea ………….

Bump up the price a bit and have it so that you compete in every competition continuously.. exp you compete in the Wold Cup then when that finishes everyone has to pick a team for the Euro championship then again when that finishes the Copa America and over and over again.

If this were the case I cant speak for anyone else but i would be far more willing to pay more money and have a continous tournament play that just 1 tournament and thats your lot.

I think between 8- 10 pound would be quite reasonable but then again I am fool who is easily parted wih my money especially when it comes to this game!

I think that only SM should make them, and say make five over the time, because these setups have to potential to be very unique on the site and we don’t want it lost.

Also, make it just GM I would say as it again forces people to get a GM and thus more money for SM.

i think that there should be qualifying rounds including every country in one season, possibly sectioned into different continents, and then the main group stages with mixed continent countries in all.

  • 5. AA  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:03 pm

    Just keep it simple!

Make them the same price as the other custom setups and they should last ‘forever’ like every other setup would.

  • 6. Raz  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm

    I agree with AA above…
    Sounds about right to me.

Either that or if theyre available only to GM’S dont price them at all for a trial period - as all GMS have paid 15 quid to join the ‘Elite’ anyway and this would give people chance to try them before buying.

Don’t see why they have to last a certain period of time though?

I think it is a great idea and should be open for all members, it should also last forever as if you buy the setup you are paying for a short time. I strongly agree with the prices they are fab! I think that if you buy the setup you should be allowed to make it an application password or private setup. I also think that changing the teams is a great idea as it would give members a chance to play with lower ranked countrys. I also think it should use the seeding process to make the groups fair and life-like.

I think this is a wonderful idea that can only makes the whole web site more enjoyable.

    great work.

What about a English Non - League Setup too ?

  • 9. CARL SPENCER  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 5:06 pm

I also believe that ALL players should NOT be available to play for Any Club in Any Setup IF they are called up for International Duty.

That would really make the whole game more ” life like ” and a whole lot more testing for the better Managers too.

  • 10. Ben Read  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    Who they should be for
First of all i love the idea and think it should only be made available for Gold Members. Why i say this is because there is more and more added for non-GM’s (eg. more Standard setup) but other than Gold setup’s and Custom Setup’s (which we pay extra for) there isn’t much extra for GM’s. I say SM should at least start off by making this a benefit for GM’s.

How the setup’s should be made
I think they should be made as Standard setups by SM only. They should NOT be opened for people to purchase, because there will become too many and they will lose there specialness. I say 1 made every week is about the right amount.

I also think the International teams should be added to the database for all to use when purchasing Custom setups. That way people can still make there own league with an international team in.

    Player Selection
On the note of player selection. I think Managers should be given a 23-man squad, and then have a 2 week period where they have the opportunity to change any 23 players for there squad and include any players from that nationality.

    You’re Fired…
I think there should also be a feature where if a team is performing particularly badly and below the chairmans expectations that manager should be sacked.

    friendlies
After the 2 week selection period, I think each team should play 3-5 friendlies as a warm up before the real thing. This is a time for managers to try out tactics and find out which players are performing well.

  • 11. Akram  |  April 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I think it should be like Standart setups like you can pusrchase, open to every one, made every day, last forever (not only for 1 season)…I agree with AA

  • 12. conia  |  April 3rd, 2008 at 12:12 am

i agree with all the things mentioned, but having to pay for having a national team kinda sucks=( Prices are low,but many people don’t have “virtual” money to spend in SM. I hope this would change=)

  • 13. Adidas F10  |  April 3rd, 2008 at 5:33 pm

I dont think that this feature should only be available to gold members as otherwise this would not be fair on normal members and to get an international team you would have to pay £15 plus the money for the setup. I think opening this feature to all members is the best thing to do.

I am a Gold Member and I don’t think this should be Gold exclusive. Instead, set up one type of international setup along the lines of the current GCs with many many nations playing in qualifying/friendly matches for the major tourneys like the continental championships, Confederations Cup and the World Cup. Keep friendlies always running as an option for the managers whose sides didn’t make it to the tourneys. These would be Gold Member exclusive. I also think that SM should allow Gold Members an additional team slot, but allow it only to be filled by an international team. So if a manager has the max teams, one more would be added only for an international team and not another regular setup or another GC side. So it’d be a 14+1 setup instead of 15 teams.

For regular members, set up individual tourneys like a World Cup, Euro, CONCACAF Gold Cup and the others like the standard setups. Set them for free and have them close once the tourney and qualifying ends while in the meantime allow managers to set friendlies on the match days. They shouldn’t be pay set-ups but instead SM created and SM regulated.

As for squad selections I can think of 3 options. One is to have SM set a 23 man roster based off some sort of formula (i.e. 3 GK, 8 Defense, 8 Midfielders, 4 forwards) and allow no changes. Another is to have SM select the best players at each position and set them as a player pool from which a roster is selected for each match/tourney. The other option is to simply let the players use the database and allow access to the entire player list for all countries.

    Wat about OFC Teams

  • 16. Ethan  |  April 6th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I think that every setup excluding european and world setups should have an international competition every month, during that 3 friendlys should be played on saturday or sunday and the last week of the month there should be a international tournement with qualifing mid-week before friendlys.

  • 17. dritan  |  April 8th, 2008 at 8:13 am

i think even thou it is a good idea it shoould be availabe to everyone

  • 18. killakhan  |  April 9th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

i really want a international team like portugal, brazil

  • 19. Thomas Flemington  |  April 10th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

What about live games, change tactics during halftime.Thankyou

  • 20. matty  |  April 18th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I agree with thomas flemington (above)… that would be great :)

I dont think these setups should be able to be bought - we will end up with every GM having their own setup and could end up with each setup being half empty.

Should be like the european setups used to be - with only a few… but with all of them always full

  • 21. lewis moore  |  April 20th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

  • 25. NICK  |  May 25th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    I LOVE THIS IDEA
I ONLY WANT TO MANAGE: BRAZIL,ITALY,FRANCE,ENGLAND,PORTUGAL ARGENTINIA

  • 26. adam scott  |  June 9th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

i think that there should definetly be international setups as people would like to manage there country and many setups should be created so you can bring in new players how you think are good not what here actually is playing

  • 27. adam scott  |  June 9th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

also gold members should get extra clubs to join the setups

  • 28. robert armstrong  |  June 10th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

i thnk they should be avalible just as normally as the other setups are . only you should have to pick your countary go through qualifing rounds then play in the acctual tornament

  • 29. Marc  |  June 13th, 2008 at 6:13 pm

What teams will be involved and will you be able to make you first 23 and the n select your team. or will you be limited with the amount of players you can use. For say 23 FIXED players who cant be swapped so to speak

  • 30. Johnathan (Jonno)  |  June 20th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Class ideas I would go for Spain or Nigeria

  • 31. jack  |  June 27th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Great idea. When is this being done?

  • 32. Victor  |  June 28th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

i have a better idea instead of creating international setups, in the Gold Championships a manager from the club’s national team that’s doing good could become the manager for their country and make tournaments and stuff

  • 33. Justin  |  June 29th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Alright But im not gona buy somthing to manage a national team

  • 34. Graeme Baillie  |  July 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 pm

  • 40. Owen Brimicombe  |  July 31st, 2008 at 9:14 am

  • 41. Harry  |  July 31st, 2008 at 10:10 am

when will the international setups be avalible in the sm shop

  • 42. Harry  |  July 31st, 2008 at 10:14 am

hopefully tomorrow please say it’s sooner or gonna be sometime in the summer

  • 43. adzs  |  August 1st, 2008 at 6:06 pm

wot we could do is have the best managers from each league get the chance to manage an international team….if one rejects the offer then it goes to the manager whos team came next in the league…then we have a ‘draft’ where all the managers are allocated numbers and with each number is a team
oh yh and tournaments should take place during a pre - season period

  • 44. dal  |  August 2nd, 2008 at 11:13 am

dat is a really gud idea i like it!!!!

  • 45. adam holmwood  |  August 4th, 2008 at 9:05 am

i dont think it should be available through the SM shop, it should be available to everyone in every league where the top managers in each league are offered a international position where they can accept it or decline it, just like when managers leave a club and another manager is offered the job

  • 46. alo  |  August 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddd tooooooo bad idea bad ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad toooooooooooooooooooooooo bad bad bad b bad bad

  • 47. Jerito  |  August 4th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

I agree with KIAYIES and i think that there is not going to be fair for small countries, so i propose that whenever you want to use a player you need to hire him by paying an amount of moeny (his wage) and you will use him for one month and you win moeny by winning matchs, the more important the match the more moeny you win. Also there should be african, american, european and asian cup, as well as a world cup between every country of the setup, Also you can be fired if youre not doing good, and priced if you are doing really good

  • 48. Jerito  |  August 4th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

take apart the “i agree with KAIYES” beacuse i confused JAJ

  • 49. thomas  |  August 9th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

how about making a setup that is own by normal member and more money handed to team that are not so good

  • 50. naiem ahemd  |  August 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    bla bla bla

  • 51. james  |  August 18th, 2008 at 5:41 am

what time exactly are they making the international setup its been 4th month since they talked about it

  • 52. frank best  |  August 18th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

This is a great idea and i love the sound of it but on the standard setups i like the idea of calling division1,division2,division,3,division4 the premiership,championship,league1,league2 and hopefully maybe having extra division like the conference, conference north and conference south as everybody would be able to be the club they suport and not only there should all 24 clubs in each division !

  • 53. Jordan Brown  |  August 18th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

top idea frank i would b gainsboro in conference north nd even sleaford town :P doubt they wud ever get ther but hu nos at leest if lincoln city get relegatd we cud still b them nxt season:P naa the imps wud never get relegated.. i like the idea of the international setup but i dont think tht u wud hv 2 buy it bcoz itll cost quite a bit of money

  • 54. Bryan Kay  |  August 21st, 2008 at 1:59 am

Good idea, but I believe that the international setups should be for free.
