Ideas & Suggested Improvements: Classic Standard Setups

June 27th, 2008 by SM Dev (ste)

A popular suggestion we receive is in relation to making ‘Classic’ standard setups, and this suggestion refers to teams of yesteryear.

Since the creation of the beautiful game the world has seen many great teams come and go, and each of these have left their mark for all to see. Could you imagine a ‘Clasic’ standard setup containing some of these great teams?

Just imagine being able to manage some of the following sides….

The great Real Madrid side which dominated the European Cup in the 1950s containing Ferenc Puskás, Francisco Gento, Héctor Rial, Raymond Kopa, José Santamaría, Miguel Muñoz, Amancio, Santillana, Juanito, José Antonio Camacho and others:

The golden era Benfica side of the 1960s inspired by Eusébio:

Internazionale’s golden era of the 1960s with Helenio Herrera as head coach:

The Ajax of Michels that won three consecutive European Cups, and inspired by Johan Cruijff:

The Bayern Munchen of the mid 1970s that completed a hattrick of European Cup with the trio of Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, and Gerd Müllers:

The above clubs should get your mouthwatering with the possibility of managing them along with a whole host of clubs that have left their mark on history.

The suggestions we have received wanted these clubs to contain the players from each era, and due to this you could see a Manchester United of 1968 and a Manchester United of 1999 within the same ‘Classic’ standard setup.

However, the suggestions have failed to point out that the majority of teams will not have squads (as this is more of a modern concept), and this could cause problems within a setup (trying to look at both sides of the coin here). Also if a setup like this was made then you would only be able to do transfers with clubs within the ‘Classic’ standard setup, and there would be no player rating changes. So you have to consider these points to see if this concept is feasible.

Also there would be controversy on what rating someone like George Best would be, and I know that this would cause countless arguments and support tickets (sorry for being negative). However, I am sure our researchers would love to watch old videos, and research these players if this idea was to get the go ahead.

This is an idea which we will consider, and if feasible then possibily look at making this at a future date (if/when we create ‘International’ standard setups we could also look at the idea of ‘Classic International’ standard setups).

Please Note: Do not contact SM Support in relation to this topic as your ticket will be closed as this article is in relation to suggestions members of our community have sent in.

Nice Idea, except when will peeps retire and such and how will you value players?

  • 2. david  |  June 27th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

i dont think you should include transfers

  • 3. Snowy4liverpool  |  June 27th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

also, we don’t no how the players would play ion the modern style of the game, with different balls, boots, diets etc. Although it would be fun to manage legends.

I think the way you would have to do it is by having a European style league, with only 2 dozen or so teams, then maybe you could add other legends into free agents or make external clubs full of different players form different teams,

  • 4. anus  |  June 27th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

i think its a great idea but it wouldnt work ( due to retirement and lack of new players).

  • 5. Dargine  |  June 27th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

In which part of their career will those players get rated? All durin’ the same month somewhere in the middle of the respective season, or all durin’ the peek of their career at that team durin’ this time period? And will ratings change?

  • 6. me  |  June 27th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

i don think itll work quite frankly but its a good idea anyway

  • 7. M  |  June 27th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I can’t see it working, a good idea though.

  • 8. gAv GaV  |  June 27th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

i dont like this idea because not many ppl wud b attracted 2 this idea.

  • 9. David K  |  June 27th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

A lovely and exciting idea unfortunately fraught with pitfalls

The older gamers, such as myself, have vour own ideas as to what constitutes a “classic team”.

  • 10. DX  |  June 28th, 2008 at 4:47 am

I think this can work. ratings will go up or down like every year when they are playing. and retire when they really retired? or no retirements.

  • 11. phil luney  |  June 28th, 2008 at 9:33 am

Great idea, would love to see it implemented so the younger members of the SM Community could see what real footballers where like, wouldn’t be easy to set up but then anything worthwhile doing never see
    Charlton,Best,Eusebio,Puskas,DiStefano,Riva,Platina,Cantona,the list is endless.
The International sides would be even better,The Mighty Magyars of the 50’s,England 66,Brazil 70,86, Holland,74,86,Argentina,78,86,Italy,82, o6,France 86,98,06 to name but a few……great idea run with it

  • 12. tebthereb  |  June 28th, 2008 at 11:19 am

ludicrous idea really, all the ratings would be static if based on the past, and rating changes are a fundamental aspect of SM. For instance, why would anyone buy a low rated player, knowing that rating could never change? Why would anyone ever sell a high rated player, knowing they wouldnt decrease? No new players would be added to the database either if it was a ‘past’ setup. BIG thumbs down.

  • 13. Chris  |  June 28th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

    Agree with what Teb said.
SM, please just concentrate on bringing in International Setups…
This way the ratings can obviously be changed which as Teb said is vital for the SM game…

Also when rating someone like George Best, what period do you base his ratings on? For example on SM if a player has a dip in form his rating will go down…How do you work out a players rating from 30 or 40 years ago based on his varied form throughout his career, playing for different teams of different standards?

Far too complicated, just wouldn’t work.
    Internationals please!!!

  • 14. dave  |  June 28th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

    i dont know them

  • 15. Nathan kirby  |  June 28th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Good idea you have to have celtic sie 1967-1975 we were best team in world at 1967 jinky johnston should be 99 :D

  • 16. Chris  |  June 28th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

    Celtic are rubbish Nathan, sssshhhhh

  • 17. Harps Dhaliwal  |  June 28th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Why don’t we create a set-up including the ‘best of’ teams? So each set-up will only have one Manchester United containing a squad made of Best, Law, Charlton, and the likes of Giggs, Schmeichel, Hughes, Cantona and even C. Ronaldo. Every team will look appealing, for example imagine Leeds United consisting of Bremner, Charles, Lorimer, McAllister, Strachan, Chapman, Kewell, Viduka, Smith & even Tony Yeboah! If a player has played for more than one club, he would be in the team he was more popular for, i.e, Cantona at Man United rather than Leeds United. Kewell at Leeds United rather than Liverpool. Ages will be taken out of the equation. Transfers done as normal. By the way when this is set-up I want AC Milan (Maldini, Lentini, Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten, Savicevic, Boban, George Weah, Kaka, Donadoni, Albertini, Rossi, Desailly, Shevchenko, Baresi, Costacurta, Massaro, Simone, Jean-Pierre Papin etc) ..

  • 18. Shelbourne FC {Forum}  |  June 29th, 2008 at 4:10 am

    I Agree With Above..

Leave This For a Few Years, Concentrate On The Now That Needs To Be Sorted Within SM & Not Just International Teams But Everthing Else Aswell.

Would Be Interesting To Play The 1990 World Cup With Ireland Tough or The 1967 European Cup With Celtic or Whatever Else..

This Would Take Ages Tough With ALL The Added Players That We Would Know Noting About From All Sorts of Teams..

    Distant Future Idea Tough,

  • 19. Stevie D  |  June 29th, 2008 at 9:37 am

Wat r use ones talkin about, da celtic team of 1967 contained a bunch of footballing legends, just cus use support rangers and use hav never won da european cup, dat is no need to dis da better half of glasgow

U RANGERS FANS R JUST JEALUS

  • 20. phil luney  |  June 29th, 2008 at 9:51 am

Spoil sports, just cos you lot dont know how to enjoy yourselves and just cos you know nothing about them doesnt mean that nobody else does,it would be a lotta fun but the way some of you get on here fun seems to be be a foreign concept, i bet the dark winter nights just fly by in your houses
Obviously you would have the Rangers 9-in-a-row team with Gazza,Souness,Laudrup and Mo Johnston to name but a few or the Northern Ireland team of 82 lol
and if Jimmy Johnstone was a 99 Nathan then Davie Cooper would be 101,so there
This is to SM dont ever ever ever post suggestions that might be fun again seems that a lotta people would choke if they had to smile

  • 21. G  |  June 29th, 2008 at 11:26 am

I agree with you Phil. Thank goodness someone actually recognises that SM are trying to give us more value for money and that they are trying to give us something unique and different.

Typical comments above from people like tebthereb and Shelbourne FC who think just because they have been around for a while and are known on the forums that they are “big wigs” who can shoot down an idea in seconds if they don’t like it. Always moaning!

This is a fantastic idea and SM are smart enough to figure out how to implement it. So what if it’s based on players who played 30 or 40 years ago? The idea is fascinating and it can definately work. Being able to manage teams of past with all those amazing players would be brilliant and a real change from the normal setups.

Also for you lot moaning, who said you have to play it? If you don’t like the idea then you don’t have to join the particular setups so don’t spoil it for others!! I’m also very sure SM are capable of sorting out the other issues that need to be addressed on here before making this. They aren’t daft.

  • 22. phil luney  |  June 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Appreciate your support on this issue G,but its just a bit of a banter and nobody takes it seriously so could you curb the hostility mate. cheers
As for Stevie D,you need to log off SM kid and go and open a Dick and Dora spelling book,we use English as our first language on here ok

  • 23. Shelbourne FC {Forum}  |  June 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    lol

I’m Not Saying Its Bad Idea But Putting It Ahead The Real SM Game,

Which Really Has Only Really Become Better & Better In The Last Year Or So Is Still Pretty Young In Terms Of Online Manager Games

It Would Be Daft of Them To Serously Put Time Into This Idea, Ahead of ALL The Other Stuff That Need To Be Done..

    “They Arent Daft”
 Overnight they liqudised the 2 team swap threads which have nearly 40,000 views between them by inrtoducing the jpb offer option (which dont get me wrong isa great option) just bad timing Just like this idea of SM Goes Retro

  • 24. Stevie D  |  June 29th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

  • 28. G  |  June 29th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

  • 31. SM  |  June 30th, 2008 at 5:56 am

I think when negotiating players, instead of the amount they cost there should be the rating.

  • 32. Philip luney  |  June 30th, 2008 at 9:54 am

Appreciate the support on this issue G but try and hold back on the hostility,we are all here putting forward an opinion and having a bit of light-hearted banter mate, there is no animosity between managers, its just a bit of a laugh
As for you Stevie D,log out of SM now and get your head stuck into a Dick and Dora spelling book, start at Book 1 thats the easiest

  • 33. G  |  June 30th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Don’t tell me what to do, I’m giving my opinion on people and I’ll say it as I will…

  • 34. Shelbourne FC {Forum}  |  June 30th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

NO’1’s Actually Stayed On Topic Since My Last Post,

SM Goes Retro At THIS TIME Isa Bad Idea, & Thats Not An Opinion IT’S Reality, :) :)

If SM Seriously Want To Spend Time On This Idea After The Mess They Made Of The Latest “Updated” Gold Championship Thats Up To Them, But There Leaving Themselfs Open To Criticism From Myself & Others.

& G Because Me & Teb Shoot This Idea Down (Teb More So) We’re Not Alowd Have An Opinion Because We’ve been Around Longer & Are Known & Respected ;) I Would Say Our Opinions Would Be Looked At More Closly Than Say…urs From Everyone Else In The Community,

  • 35. Nathan kirby  |  June 30th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

G im dyslecsike u idiot and im not kissing tebs arse. An way steve coudnt care less what u think of me i doitn really care what any of you do im only putting my opinions forward. • 36. Chris Munroe  |  July 1st, 2008 at 10:41 am

Bring the United squad of ‘68 and ‘99…nuff said. To be fair to people who support rubbish teams though (lol), the Liverpool squad of ‘89, and the Real Madrid & Leeds teams of 2002. In memory of Arsenals flukey undefeated season, you should bring in that ‘04 squad.

  • 37. Stevie D  |  July 3rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm

yeeeeeeeooooooooo NATHEN I GOT DA LAST WORD

  • 38. Matt  |  July 5th, 2008 at 5:08 am

Argh. Small side note to SM. Can I make a request to make the words ‘Required’ in a different, more visable font? Obviously my eyesight is not as good as I thought and lost my large reply to this topic because I didnt not enter my message.

So, now I will just summarize what I wrote cause I cant be bothered retyping the whole thing.

    * Just because some of us think it wont work, SM might be able to have seperate rules for these new setups. So saying its a silly idea is silly, just based on an assumption it wont work.

    * Would we really need retirements to enjoy such a setup?

    * Ratings could randomly change up to say 10 points around the rating that the researchers give a player (we would not know the actual rating as to keep us guessing. That way we are more likely to get a bargain, or waste our money, and transfers of the very highest and very lowest rated players are more likely to go ahead.

    * To get to play with such legends of the past would be great, and no doubt popular IF SM can make it work. But disadvantages such as perhaps no retirements would surely be minor given that we get something new and interesting added to the site.

  • 39. Gideon  |  July 5th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Maybe off topic but I suggest a limited size squad of 40 players per team maximum. I am in a league with 103 players on the Chelsea squad which is ridiculous. Now that he has bought all the best players he is buying up all the promising youth players as well. No real life club has that many players and it is taking the fun out for everybody else.
